Leffler Chapel and Performance Center Hosts 2020 Ware Lecture
On Wednesday, March 18 at 7:30 p.m. in Leffler Chapel, Elizabethtown College will host one of the Center for Global Understanding and Peacemaking’s signature events: the Judy S. ’68 and Paul W. Ware Lecture. This year’s lecture is centered around peacemaking and features lecturer Jeremy Gilley, the founder of Peace One Day.
Following a successful career as an actor and documentary filmmaker, Jeremy Gilley founded the non-profit project Peace One Day in 1999. His big idea was to establish one day every year where every single warring nation would lay down its arms.
Following Jeremy’s campaign to establish this annual day of non-violence and global ceasefire, a General Assembly resolution was unanimously adopted by UN member states in September 2001, establishing Sept. 21 as the UN International Day of Peace. The main objective of Peace One Day is to make Peace Day self-sustaining. Peace One Day campaigns in education, music, film, sport, dance, and over the internet.
Tickets for the Ware Lecture are required. You can secure your free ticket by calling 717-361-4757 or by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org.
In celebration of Gilley’s work, E-town will host its own Peace One Day on Tuesday, Feb. 18. Students, faculty, and staff are invited to stop by the Baugher Student Center from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. to sign a Peace Pledge, pick up free giveaways, and learn about how you can spread peace on our campus.
There will also be a special screening of Gilley’s documentary, Peace One Day, on Feb. 18 at 7 p.m. in Gibble Auditorium, located inside Esbenshade Hall.
